FRIDA KAHLO

Obraz
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter and a feminist of German, Indian and Spanish descent.   In the nutshell, her art consists of vibrant colors, of Mexican, European surrealism and realism elements and imagery. She mostly painted self-portraits perfectly expressing her misery through the canvas.  She had been suffering from persistent pain all her life. As a child she had polio (therefore, as an adult she was wearing long skirts to cover the disproportion between her right and left leg) and then, at age 18, she was injured in the bus accident. Her pelvis was pierced by a metal bar. She undergone around 30 surgeries. Long rehabilitation and recovery process caused her interest in arts.  Frida’s image is associated with flowered hairstyles; long, colorful traditional Tehuana skirts and a unibrow.   She had a complicated relationship with Diego Rivera, with whom she was married to and pregnant but unfortunately, she miscarried twice. They were like chalk and cheese; ...

THE BYSTANDER EFFECT

Obraz
The term “bystander” means literally someone who stands by, an onlooker, someone who is watching something happening in the public place and is unrelated to the case.  The bystander effect is a psychological phenomenon that states that individuals are less likely to intervene in dangerous situations when they are in a crowd. The witnesses tend to passively stare or just pass by the victim.   There are many theories explaining this apathetic behavior in the bigger groups. For me, the most possible one is that they don’t want to interfere because of stress, they want others to react or they assume that if the crowd passes by the person, it isn’t an emergency.    When you need help, the best idea is to choose one bystander and directly ask for help. It is less likely to receive a refusal because the witness would feel more obligated to help you.

Human body needs regeneration on regular basis to function properly. Our busy schedules, heavy workload, sedentary lifestyle and poor nutrition impact the quality of sleep.      It is essential to get enough amount of sleep to stay healthy and vital, look refreshed and think clearly. Insomnia may lead to the state of irritation, mood swings, problems with concentration, weight gain or even it can contribute to depression and anxiety.    Nonetheless, oversleeping is abnormal as well and associated with similar health problems to sleep deprivation. The happy medium is to sleep enough time according to your age and personal needs. The picture below gives an estimate of how much we should sleep in every stage of our lives:       As you can see, the older we get, the less sleep we need.      The puzzle is – how to improve the quality of sleep? Firstly, avoid caffeine – a cup of tea or coffee is not the best drink to consume late i...

"Failure is not the opposite of success; it's part of success"

Obraz
Failure is an inevitable part of our lives. Everyone makes mistakes and the key is to learn to avoid repeating them in the future . Besides success tastes better when we know it has been achieved thanks to blood, sweat and tears. Each failure builds our personality and character. If everything was too easy to reach, it wouldn’t be fulfilling and challenging to work on it since literally everyone could do that. Failing accompanies us in every period of our existence. For instance, toddlers learn how to crawl at first and later they try to stand up. They often fall down. If they hadn't been falling down and trying to stand up over and over again, they would have never learned how to walk! The famous quote “to err is human” perfectly sums up the value of failures. Someone who makes no mistakes usually doesn’t do anything worthy.

Is unconscious manipulation of the consumer any different from regular marketing and advertising?

Obraz
Adverts surround us almost everywhere: we see them while scrolling through social media; watching the TV; checking e-mails and moreover even outside home during a family walk, banners and billboards show up and seduce us to purchase various products or services. Most of the time customers are not aware of the fact they are being manipulated. Advertisers use psychology methods to influence on a client. They do not only store data about customers’ preferences and personal information but they place kids and pets in ads because they are perceived as innocent and we are emotionally bond to them, they mislead us by using asterisks (for various notifications and warnings in small, barely readable fonts) and wordplay and they even hire actors to play fake doctors and specialists. Standard marketing should be unharmful and a consumer should be fully aware of all its aspects, because manipulation of unaware consumers is dangerous for them and unethical as well. Consumers have right to be ...

Caliphate

Obraz
I’ve watched the Swedish series called “Caliphate” recently, which triggered my interest in a problem of terrorism worldwide. The series deals with lives of Arabs in their countries and abroad, those who are Muslims and of other beliefs. It gives various perspectives from Arabian students living in Sweden, a Muslim woman living in Syria and a Swedish policewoman. The plot is built around a planned ISIS attack on Sweden which connects each of these women. We can see how people are encouraged to join ISIS through the brainwashing and we learn about lives of women in ISIS countries as well as about young Arabs fighting the terrorism stigma and prejudices. The movie settings, actors, the script and suchlike are phenomenal and of high-quality. Cruel scenes of war in Syria, which were in fact shoot in Jordan are very realistic. Everything is just perfect. I reckon the film is both educational and interesting. It has a lot of suspense and plot twists which causes viewers to bite theirs nails....
