the power of sleep

Human body needs regeneration on regular basis to function properly. Our busy schedules, heavy workload, sedentary lifestyle and poor nutrition impact the quality of sleep.

It is essential to get enough amount of sleep to stay healthy and vital, look refreshed and think clearly. Insomnia may lead to the state of irritation, mood swings, problems with concentration, weight gain or even it can contribute to depression and anxiety.

Nonetheless, oversleeping is abnormal as well and associated with similar health problems to sleep deprivation. The happy medium is to sleep enough time according to your age and personal needs. The picture below gives an estimate of how much we should sleep in every stage of our lives:

As you can see, the older we get, the less sleep we need.

The puzzle is – how to improve the quality of sleep? Firstly, avoid caffeine – a cup of tea or coffee is not the best drink to consume late in the day. Also, blue light exposure has been proven to interfere with falling asleep. Computers and smartphones are entertaining but unfortunately, they are damaging for your sleep routine. Reducing long naps during the daytime may be effective as well – that one doesn’t refer to cat naps, those ones are actually healthy (but do not exaggerate – 15 minutes will be enough to recharge your batteries).
