THE BYSTANDER EFFECT

The term “bystander” means literally someone who stands by, an onlooker, someone who is watching something happening in the public place and is unrelated to the case.

The bystander effect is a psychological phenomenon that states that individuals are less likely to intervene in dangerous situations when they are in a crowd. The witnesses tend to passively stare or just pass by the victim.

There are many theories explaining this apathetic behavior in the bigger groups. For me, the most possible one is that they don’t want to interfere because of stress, they want others to react or they assume that if the crowd passes by the person, it isn’t an emergency.

When you need help, the best idea is to choose one bystander and directly ask for help. It is less likely to receive a refusal because the witness would feel more obligated to help you.
